This is derived from the hypothalamus and is thought to be involved in sleep/wake cycles, food intake and pleasure-seeking behaviour. The peptide hypocretin (orexin) may be involved. The precise cause of narcolepsy is unknown both environmental and genetic factors may play a part: First-degree relatives are at increased risk of narcolepsy compared with the general population. It is possible that incidence statistics would increase if diagnostic features were recognised at an earlier age. One study found that narcolepsy with cataplexy was often linked to complex movement disorders. Less than 5% of narcolepsy with cataplexy occurs in children.A smaller number of narcolepsy cases presents at around 35 years. Age of onset is typically around adolescence.P atients with narcolepsy without cataplexy are thought to represent only 36% of all narcolepsy patients. The prevalence of narcolepsy type 1 is between 25 and 100 per 100,000 people. It’s not easy for me to make the sleep appointment with my schedule right now, but if there’s a potential fix that won’t involve me gaining 30 lbs in 4 months I’m more likely to try and make it happen. My partners (that I’ve warned in advance) have been understanding, but I get so upset I tear up literally every time(legit multiple full body cataplexy attacks per sexual attempt). I tried SSRIs at one point but I gained too much weight and felt like I was drunk all day (also unfortunately as a guy I had even more issues w/ED).Īre there any medications (ideally other than SSRIs) that benefit Cataplexy, especially without other negative sexual side effects? Has anyone had success treating their sexual cataplexy, and if so how/what regimen? It’s thoroughly embarrassing and I’ve found I tend to avoid relationships due to it. I’ve also had issues in the past with payments for these expensive visits. I just haven’t taken the formal sleep test as I’m graduating University (supposed to last semester) and I don’t really have concrete housing/schedule. I’ve been very embarrassed to tell my Dr, however my current Dr actually has it written down he’s fairly certain I have a sleep disorder (I have all the narcolepsy symptoms). However I quickly found out I get complete full body cataplexy when having sex. I wasn’t sexually active when I started treatment and it was written off as ADD to make getting refills easier for stimulants. I’ve been on first Ritalin and more recently Vyvanse for years now for the EDS (8 years now). ![]()
